Public art as critical art. For a re-signification of urban space

publication date: December 2023abstract: This article aims at examining the role that public art might have in processes of reconfiguration and resignfiication of urban space in view of the unveiling of absent emergencies, with a specific focus on Jorit’s murals’ located in Naples’ peripheral areas. Rancière’s politico-aesthetic methodology enables to critically analyze the relationship between public art and the distribution of the sensible. The objective is to identify alternative cartographies proposed by such works through the sensory clash they catalyze, hallmark of emergency aesthetics, and crucial in the re-writing of excluding urban narratives.
