Lo zombie, l’umano e l’AI. Semiotica della voce e del sintomo
lingua: italiano
data di pubblicazione: settembre 2025abstract: The figural apparatus of the Zombie (Eco, 1964) highlights the semiotic interplay between voice, body, and symptom. While no zombie possesses a true voice, it nonetheless produces unsettling sounds. This "non-vocal sonority," devoid of articulation, recalls Aristotle’s distinction between meaningful voice and non-symbolic (??????????) or symptomatic sound (Eco, 2007).
Through the zombie imaginary, we will examine the voice-sound relationship, its affective dimension, and the interplay between the human and the non-human (zoo-semiotics), as well as the tension between signification and symptom.
These themes resurface in the semiotic analysis of the philosophical zombie experiment, represented through the construction of a square that underscores the relationship of contrariety. The zombie, a body devoid of vocal thought, contrasts with a vocal thought devoid of a body—pure artificial intelligence. AI, as the potential antithesis of the Zombie, compels us to reflect on the nature of humanity and the semiotic implications of embodiment.
Zombie outbreaks or the reign of robots — symptoms, harrowing sounds, and decaying bodies, or disembodied words and sterile minds: what insights do these imaginaries offer us?
