The influence of parental styles in France and Italy on children’s independent mobility (CIM) and its effects on emplaced knowledge
lingua: inglese
data di pubblicazione: maggio 2025abstract: This article presents a comprehensive literature review on the concept of Children’s Independent Mobility (CIM) and its relationship with parenting styles and emplaced knowledge, focusing specifically on the contexts of France and Italy. The review begins by defining CIM and discussing its significance and evolution over recent decades. It explores how parenting ideals have evolved in both countries and examines the factors influencing parents’ decisions regarding CIM. The review also investigates the learning opportunities provided by the urban environment for children with limited independent mobility, highlighting parental concerns and societal perceptions.
Despite similarities in fears and concerns regarding children’s safety, there is a notable absence of literature addressing the specific challenges and nuances associated with promoting CIM in France and Italy. The review underscores the tension between fostering autonomy and succumbing to parental fears, particularly in the context of contemporary parenting styles. It aims to bridge this gap by exploring the relationship between children’s autonomy, cultural contexts, parenting styles, and emplaced knowledge.
Through a systematic analysis of existing literature, this review aims to provide insights into the complexities of children’s independent mobility within the French and Italian contexts. By addressing these gaps in the literature, it seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing CIM and its implications for children’s development and well-being.
